Growing Together: Unlocking Ukraine’s Agricultural Potential on its Path to EU Integration

On July 26, 2024, the Ukraine Facility Platform (UAFP) convened an exclusive round table “Growing Together: Ukraine’s Agricultural Potential in the EU Context” in Kyiv. This pivotal event gathered key stakeholders from the agricultural sector, including business leaders, experts, and representatives from various associations, to discuss how Ukraine can enhance its role in the EU’s agricultural landscape.

Participants emphasized that the success of Ukraine’s recovery and its economic growth is closely tied to its integration into the EU’s resilience strategies, even prior to full EU membership. This integration is expected to unlock new funding opportunities, attract investments, and foster sustainable growth that aligns with EU standards.

Key areas of focus included:

Food and Animal Feed Formulation: The speakers focused their main attention on how this burgeoning industry in Ukraine is positioned to help the EU reduce reliance on imports from Russia. It can be achieved if Ukraine provides innovative feed formulations that do not depend on specific Russian components.

Soybean Processing: With advanced processing technologies, Ukraine provides high-quality soybean products that are increasingly relied upon in EU animal feed chains.

Pharmaceuticals: Ukraine’s existing presence in international markets positions it to contribute to the EU’s critical medicine supply and the growing food supplement sector.

Additionally, the round table highlighted less conventional strengths of Ukraine’s agricultural sector, such as:

Space Technology: Utilizing satellite data to optimize crop yields and adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Soil Decontamination: Developing advanced remediation technologies essential for restoring agricultural lands.

Green Transition: Promoting cross-sectoral collaborations that harness biomass for renewable energy generation.

UAFP extends its sincere gratitude to Olga Trofimtseva, Head of the Agricultural and Food Security Sector at UAFP, for expertly moderating the discussions.

As Ukraine continues to explore and promote its agricultural capabilities, the UAFP is committed to facilitating cooperation between Ukraine and the EU. This collaboration is vital for positioning Ukraine as an integral player in European growth strategies.
